A Semester at CEFAM

Academic Information

Full time study abroad students at CEFAM must take at least four classes per semester (the normal load is five) including:

  • 3 credit French language class
  • 1 credit French culture class

CEFAM will register students for classes based on the information communicated to our administration by the students’ home universities. Any changes after that point must be communicated to CEFAM by the universities’ academic advisors or study abroad departments.

The CEFAM Program follows the American Liberal Arts tradition in education, allowing CEFAM students to study business and non-business subjects. Credits earned at CEFAM are transferable to our partner universities in the United States.

At CEFAM, all courses are taught in English by professors with advanced educational degrees and considerable experience in their particular professional area. CEFAM students benefit from a close-working environment and high professor-students contact ratio to ensure optimal conditions for a business education in an international setting.

French Classes

The CEFAM study abroad program includes French language classes in accordance with the students’ level  focused on :

  • Pronunciation
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Oral expression

All our study abroad students also enjoy a French Culture and Civilization course designed to provide some insight to France, its people, and its culture.

Activities

Activities and visits are organized throughout the semester to allow students to become familiar with Lyon and France and to feel at home during their stay.
Visits often include a tour of Lyon, a day trip to Annecy, a beautiful town 2 hours away from Lyon, and cheese and wine tasting.

Each year, CEFAM organizes a Halloween party and a Thanksgiving dinner, bringing together CEFAM staff, faculty, and students for these traditional American celebrations.

Accommodations

Students may choose from 2 types of accommodations: single apartments and homestay.

Single Apartments

Students will be staying at Nexity Studea Residence.

The single apartments are studios made up of a kitchen/eating area, equipped with the basic kitchen supplies including dishes and basic appliances, a sleeping area, storage space (closet, drawers), and a private bathroom.

The apartment also includes a desk and access to internet.
The residence is located 5 minutes from CEFAM by subway and 10 minutes on foot from Lyon city center.

Homestay

Students can also choose to experience life in a French family if they really want to become immersed in French life. They will live with an approved French family in Lyon and share the family’s life, meals, and language.

The packages are flexible, offering accommodations plus up to 5 breakfasts and dinners per week.

Enrollment Process

Required Documents

Application to CEFAM requires the following documents:

  • Application form
  • A personal statement
  • A sealed official transcript
  • A copy of the student’s passport
  • An ID picture

Students at our partner universities should submit their application documents directly to their Academic Advisors.

Students from other universities should send application documents to:
CEFAM
Study Abroad Programs
47 rue Sergent Michel Berthet
69009 LYON

Via Academic Advisor

While at CEFAM, students take courses that have been pre-approved by their academic advisors at their home universities. Students must meet with their advisor and discuss their semester abroad in detail; they should also confirm in advance and in writing which courses are electives and which are degree requirements.

Students are also advised to remember that a minimum of 12 academic credits are required to maintain a student visa in France.

Procedure

Once CEFAM receives the application form and the other required documents, applicants will be sent an Enrollment Packet and a learning agreement.  Those documents must be filled out and signed by the applicant’s study abroad advisor and returned to CEFAM.

Course registration will depend on student availability and scheduling constraints.
